Sta. Rosa City is PH’s Earth Hour Capital for 2016

Santa Rosa City in Laguna has been declared the Philippines’ Earth Hour Capital by the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour City Challenge for its energy and environment conservation campaigns.

“Sta. Rosa City in Laguna has initiatives ranging from the erection of solar street lights to the construction of a composting facility designed to minimize landfill waste,” WWF said in a statement.

Santa Rosa placed 5th in WWF’s “We Love Cities” global campaign on social media and will be recognized alongside Paris, the Global Earth Hour Capital for 2016. San Carlos in Negros Occidental and Makati City also placed 4th and 19th, respectively. The three cities will be recognized on August 12 in Manila.

Other places named as Earth Hour Capitals are Boulder, USA; Singapore, Singapore; Shenzhen, China; Hue City, Vietnam and others. All chosen capitals will be recognized in October in Quito, Ecuador.

The Earth Hour City Challenge is a year-long competition among cities to promote renewable energy and prepare for climate change

According to the WWF, The Earth Hour City Challenge initiative has been created “to celebrate cities that are taking amazing steps forward in creating a greener, cleaner and more sustainable city to live in, while inspiring other cities to do the same.”
