Angat Dam rehabilitation on track, finished by 2018 – AHC

The rehabilitation of the 218 – megawatt Angat Dam is on track and is expected to be finished in two years, an Angat Hydropower Corp. official said.

AHC company president and CEO Geung Jeon Had announced that they have tapped in Hanjin Heavy Industries as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor of the project.

“AHC is implementing the Angat Dam strengthening project with signing [for the EPC contract] was conducted in November 2. The project is targeted to be completed in February 2018,” he said.

The EPC contracts marks the start of the second phase of the rehabilitation that covers the strengthening of the main dam, main dyke, and secondary dyke, and the heightening of the main dam and installing of new dam instruments for monitoring.

The rehabilitation costs $1 billion and is expected to provide the dam stability for another 50 years, dam operations engineer Russel Rigor said.

Operations will remain unaffected despite the ongoing rehabilitation.

National Power Corp (Napocor) president and chief executive officer Gladys Cruz – Sta. Rita said “The rehabilitation is very important because will ease the fears and concerns of our fellowmen especially those living in Bulacan of any tragedy that may happen if any earthquake occurs,”

Aside from hydropower, the Angat dam also supplies 90 percent of Metro Manila’s water requirements

The Angat Hydropower Corp. is a joint – venture of Korea Water Resources Corp. and San Miguel Corporation’s SMC Global Power Holdings Corp.
