Energy department calls for LGUs to be energy efficient

The Department of Energy (DOE) is urging the local government units to implement energy efficiency measures and ordinances amid threats brought about by climate change.

DOE Energy Utilization and Management Bureau (EUMB) Director Jesus Tamang is asking for the cooperation of the other government branches – including LGUs – in helping realize the agency’s energy efficiency and conservation plans.

“We believe that if LGU can start mandating the use of energy-efficient technologies, then we can have an accelerated adaptation,” Tamang said at the Energy Smart Visayas forum in a report by SunStar.

He added that it would be better if LGUs issued ordinances on energy efficiency – including the provision of incentives to establishments that use energy-efficient technologies.

Included in EUMB’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Division (EECD) roadmap are the measures in LGU’s development plans and the advocacy for the legislation of Energy Efficiency and Conservation Bill; conduct of information, education and communication (IEC) campaigns; integration of energy efficiency and conservation (EE&C) in educational system; and the expansion of financing opportunities for EE&C stakeholders and projects.

“What we’re saying here is that energy efficiency and conservation is not that the government will follow the curve. We will be at the front,” the DOE official said.

In the same forum, the EU delegation to the Philippines expressed their support for the country’s energy efficiency and measures to reduce its carbon emissions.
