Coal remains to be the dominant source of power for the Philippines, data from the Department of Energy (DOE) showed.
In a report by the Manila Times, DOE’s Power Statistic’s report for 2017 said that coal had an installed capacity of 8,049 megawatts (MW). This is 8.5 percent higher versus 2016’s 7, 419 MW.
Meanwhile, renewable energy (RE) went up by 1.7 percent to 7,079 MW from 6,958 MW.
Oil posted 4, 153 MW in 2017, 14.9 percent higher versus 2016’s 3, 616 MW. While natural gas contributed 3, 447 MW in 2017.
Power generation, in general, went up by 3.9 percent to 94, 370 GWh from 90,798 GWh in 2016.
Coal generated 46, 847 GWh in 2017, while RE and natural gas produced 23, 183 Gwh and 20, 547 GWh, respectively.
Meanwhile, Oil power plants had a lower generation of 3, 793 GWh in 2017 versus 5, 661 GWh in 2016.
