Energy Department clears 5 power projects for grid impact study

The Department of Energy has cleared five power projects with around 500 megawatts (MW) in capacity for grid impact studies (GIS) at the end of November 2016.

Data from the DOE showed that the five approved projects are seen to generate 566.7 MW of electricity.

Among the approved are hydropower plants: the 4.5 MW Sawaga River mini hydro power plant and 6.2 MW Katipunan River mini hydro power plant of the REPower Energy Development Corp. in Bukidnon.

The 24 MW biogas power plant of the Renewable Energy Development Corp. in Cagayan was also approved for GIS.

Vires Energy Corp also secured its GIS for its 500 MW liquefied natural gas plant in Batangas City – the biggest plant on the list.

SPC Power Corp. also got its clearance to do a study on its 32 MW Power Barge 104 in Subic, Zambales.

70 projects have been cleared for GIS as of writing.

A GIS is needed in determining if the power generated by the power project can be absorbed by the grid.
