The upgrading of the transmission line in Eastern Visayas to prevent power outages in the corridor is nearing its final stages.

The  P697.9 million expansion project of Ormoc-Babatngon plant in Eastern Visayas is 94 percent complete according to the National Gridp Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP).

Ormoc-Babatngon generates 138 kiloVolt (kV) and is one of the two components that is included in the Leyte-Samar transmission corridor.

“Samar and Leyte distribution utilities are set to benefit from the upgrading of the said transmission line,” it said.

Improvements on the substation are soon to take place and is expected to be complete before the year ends.

“This line reinforcement strengthens transmission services in Eastern Visayas, particularly improving power supply delivery to Samar. It is NGCP’s continuing commitment to upgrade and improve of the country’s transmission network, especially with the constantly growing demand for power,” NGCP said.

It also said the upgrade will give way to a stronger transmission corridor from geothermal plants and other generating capacities in Leyte to Samar Island.

“Currently, the line is a single circuit. Outages along the line, planned or unplanned, result in a loss of power for the Samar provinces, which remains heavily reliant on power supply from other islands,” it said.

NGCP’s expansion project also includes the expansion of the Ormon-Babatngon Substations in Leyte.
