The Department of Energy (DOE) has seen a 30 percent reduction in electricity demand after the enhanced community quarantine was implemented.

This in comparison with last year’s energy consumption in the same period, which means that most of the economic activities have slowed down.

“There are also delays in on-going construction and other activities in the energy sector. We received reports that some of the foreign contractors and workers are not able to travel. There are also issues on the late delivery of imported equipment and parts needed for energy facilities (generation, distribution projects, because of the slowdown in global production,” DOE Secretary Alfonso Cusi was quoted in a statement.

These may result in delays in the completion of on-going projects and gradually block energy-related investments.

DOE noted it may cause problems related to energy reliability and capacity in the long run, however the department will continue to advise the public on effective ways that provide the necessary energy solutions for the benefit of all consumers and stakeholders.

The DOE ensures they will provide 24/7 energy services to every home and institutions amidst the fight against the COVID-19.
