The Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) said that it may take several days before power in its entire franchise area is fully restored following the onslaught of Typhoon Ulysses over Luzon on Thursday.
MERALCO spokesman Joe Zaldarriaga explained that the power giant incurred substantial damages, which it hopes to fix as soon as the weather improves and there are no impending hazards such as floods.
Some 3.8 million or 56% of MERALCO’s customers lost electricity as of Thursday dawn. This went down to 1.6 million customers by early afternoon.
Most customers still without electricity are from Metro Manila (590,243), followed by Bulacan (588,937), where the typhoon’s eye passed through. MERALCO’s franchise area also covers the entire Cavite and Rizal, as well as parts of Laguna, Quezon, Batangas, and Pampanga.
Zaldarriaga has asked for understanding among those customers who are still affected.
