The GNPower Kauswagan coal-fired power plant, as well as eight other projects, have secured approval from the Department of Energy to conduct a system impact study (SIS) on their respective facilities.

GNPower Kauswagan Ltd. Co. in particular was endorsed to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines for clearance to conduct an SIS for its power plant in Kauswagan, Lanao Del Norte.

An SIS is an engineering study that assesses the impact of a proposed interconnection or transmission service request on the safety and reliability of a transmission system.

Based on the DOE’s data, the GNPower Kauswagan plant — a partnership of AC Energy, the Philippine Investment Alliance for Infrastructure Fund, and Power Partners, Ltd. — has an installed capacity of 605.2 megawatts.

AC Energy, however, announced in late 2020 that it is divesting from its coal projects prior to its 2030 original schedule. Ayala’s power arm already transferred its ownership in GNPower Kauswagan to Power Partners, the plant’s developer.
