A generator of the GNPower Mariveles Coal-fired Power Plant in Bataan went on an unscheduled outage, according to its owner Aboitiz Power Corporation.

Unit 1 of the 632-megawatt plant suddenly shut down due to the partial damage of its boiler, AboitizPower said in its disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange.

“The procurement of the necessary services for restoration works is underway, and, based on AboitizPower’s current assessment, completion of said works and Unit 1’s return to service are targeted by Q3 2021, but may take up to year-end 2021,” part of the disclosure read.

“[The plant’s] insurance brokers and adjusters have been informed, and the parties are currently undergoing the process of filing the insurance claims. Coordination with regulators and other key stakeholders is also ongoing,” the disclosure further stated.

Commissioned in 2013, GNPower Mariveles is Luzon’s largest greenfield plant built after the passage of Republic Act 9136 or the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) in 2001. AboitizPower took control of the plant, along with the GNPower Dinginin project, in 2016.

AboitizPower is currently the country’s largest power generator, based on the latest data from the Department of Energy.
