MALAKING TIPID: 146 QC public schools to be powered by solar

Japan’s TEPCO to build a solar – diesel plant in Catanduanes

About 146 public schools in Quezon City will reportedly by installed with solar panels to help lower utility costs.

Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista said that the plans to solarize the city’s public schools will help manage the expected rise in electricity costs as the city government builds additional classrooms which are meant to accommodate increasing number of enrollees.

“Because of the number of school buildings and classrooms we’ve built and we’ll be building, tataas din yung electricity bills (our electric bills will rise). That’s why it is also a thrust to solarize the 146 schools in QC so that when the electricity bill is reduced, their savings can be used for other education programs,” Bautista was quoted in a Manila Bulletin report.

The installation of the solar panels is in line with the city government’s plan to be “greener” through alternative and renewable energy sources.

The city government installed solar panels to three buildings in Commonwealth High School in 2017.

“Undeniably, that is the future of Quezon City. I hope that happens in the next administration,” Bautista added.

Other green programs of the city are the Local Climate Change Action Plan aiming to identify sectors that emit more greenhouse gases (GHG) and consume more energy.

In addition, the city also purchased electronic tricycles and electronic jeepneys to promote green transport. A waste-to-energy plant is in the pipeline as part of its green waste management program.
