Mindanao records lower power demand

The Department of Energy-Mindanao Field Office (DOE) has seen a decrease in the region’s power demand and generation.

The reduced demand started in the third week of March, when certain areas in Mindanao started enforcing lockdowns and community quarantine to fight the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The average reduction in system demand was about 165 MW or a 9.5 percent decrease.

On March 29 this year, the system demand was recorded at 1,489 MW, the second lowest level since 1 January 2020, which was at 1,465 MW.

“While there is enough supply capacity for the Mindanao grid, the DOE-MFO is also actively collaborating with concerned national government agencies and local government units to ensure the unhampered delivery of energy products and services, including the deployment of vital personnel of energy facilities amidst the strict implementation of community quarantines and lockdowns in different areas in Mindanao,” DOE was quoted.
