Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. is building an integrated energy system composed of solar energy, natural gas, and battery energy storage system in Tabangao, Batangas.
The said energy facility will supply the electricity requirements of its 110, 000 barrels per day refinery.
Once completed, the facility will earn the distinction of being the first oil refinery with an industrial-scale solar farm in the Philippines, as well as one having the largest battery storage projects in Southeast Asia,
The energy system aims to produce power around 2, 400 megawatt hours of power every year, which is enough to supply more than 850 homes.
Aside from improving the energy efficiency of Pilipinas Shell’s Tabangao Refinery, it also targets to reduce around 8, 760 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
Work on the solar farm is anticipated to begin next month, the installation of battery system is scheduled for the second quarter of 2020.
Pilipinas Shell and Royal Dutch Shell’s (RDS) New Energies business collaborated for this integrated solution to show Shell’s aspiration to thrive in the energy transition, Pilipinas Shell’s president and chairman of Shell companies in the Philippines Cesar Romero said.
“Pilipinas Shell takes a broad perspective on the energy transition and will deliver commercially viable energy solutions to our own sites. This started in our retail business, where there are currently 39 Shell retail stations in the Philippines already fitted out with solar panels and energy efficient equipment,” Romero was quoted in a BusinessMirror report.
The use of cleaner energies for the said energy system is Pilipinas Shell’s contribution to the overall goal of RDS to take part in doing efforts to address climate change while providing the world’s energy needs.
