SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP), the joint venture company of Aboitiz Power Corporation and SN Power of Norway, will push through with its planned pilot battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant complex at the Isabela-Ifugao area.

Based on a report by The Philippine Star, SNAP President and CEO Joseph Yu said the company is working on an energy storage system with a 20-megawatt (MW) capacity and 20-megawatt hour energy storage particularly in Ramon, Isabela. The project would be used primarily for ancillary services.

Yu added that site survey procedures have been completed as part of the pre-construction stage and in preparation for the project’s engineering design and construction phases.

BESS is a type of energy storage system that is capable of storing energy electrochemically. It can be connected to the grid, small grid, distribution system, or end-user facility to deliver the energy demand when needed.

SNAP aims to begin commercial operations of the Magat BESS project by 2023.

The Magat BESS is one of the 12 projects totalling 248MW that parent firm AboitizPower aims to develop in the next ten years. It will serve as the company’s model for future battery investments and hybrid renewable energy projects.

Another BESS project that AboitizPower has begun installing is subsidiary Therma Marine, Inc’s (TMI) 49MW facility in Maco, Davao De Oro.

SNAP’s Magat facility also houses a 200-kilowatt floating solar project inside its reservoir, which provides it with internal power. The floating solar project, which was successfully switched on in June 2019, paved the way for the joint venture’s plans to scale up its floating solar portfolio.
