The Department of Energy (DOE) has introduced the Nuclear Energy Roadmap, which aims to guide the country toward integrating nuclear power into its energy mix.

DOE Undersecretary Sharon Garin said that the release of the nuclear energy roadmap in 2024 marks a significant step for the Philippines’ energy transition.

“We aim to have commercially operational nuclear power plants by 2032, with at least 1,200 MW initially entering the country’s power mix, gradually increasing to 4,800 MW by 2050,” said Garin.

The roadmap, which takes an integrated approach to introducing nuclear power into the country’s energy mix, serves as a strategic blueprint to navigate the integration of nuclear power, utilizing the IAEA’s Milestones Approach for safe and efficient program development.

The Nuclear Energy Program – Inter-Agency Committee (NEP-IAC) has established six sub-committees to address the 19 infrastructure issues identified by the IAEA.

Garin further explained that the government is in the process of setting up an independent nuclear regulatory authority to ensure the safe and secure advancement of the country’s nuclear energy program (NEP).

Additionally, the energy undersecretary said that priority is being placed on passing key legislation aimed at strengthening nuclear safety, with a focus on establishing robust legal and regulatory frameworks to protect public health, the environment, and national security as the country progresses toward utilizing nuclear energy.

“The beneficial uses of nuclear technology have been extensive across sectors, leading to improved quality of life. These uses span the fields of health and medical, agriculture, industrial, and energy,” said Garin.
