First Gen Corporation’s renewable energy subsidiary, Energy Development Corp. (EDC), has been granted preliminary survey assignments and exploration (PSPE) for two new geothermal projects in Indonesia.
In a report by the Manila Bulletin, EDC said it now has the rights to explore and drill geothermal energy developments for the Koto Sani Tanjung Bingkung and Bora Pulu projects.
EDC said that this latest development aligns with First Gen’s broader strategy to establish a 13,000-megawatt (MW) low-carbon energy portfolio by 2030, with 9,000 MW to be generated by renewable energy sources.
Joeffrey Caranto, EDC’s head of international business development, received the grant and emphasized that the projects would benefit the Philippines and the entire region.
EDC is also eyeing more clean energy development opportunities in Mindanao and Luzon to meet its renewable energy goals. The company currently operates geothermal, wind, solar, and hydropower facilities, with a total capacity of around 1,500 MW.
Additionally, EDC is planning to integrate a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to enhance its geothermal facilities in regions such as Bicol, Leyte, and Negros.
EDC accounts for approximately 61% of the Philippines’ total installed geothermal capacity.
