MERALCO, South Korea’s Doosan sign MOU for low-carbon initiatives

Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with South Korean-based firm Doosan Enerbility Co., Ltd., to pursue strategic alliances aimed at advancing low-carbon energy projects in the Philippines.

“Partnering with reputable and dependable companies like Doosan aligns well with our pursuit to continuously explore innovative energy solutions that we can adopt as we work towards ensuring availability of sufficient, affordable and reliable power to meet our country’s long-term goals,” said Meralco Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Manuel V. Pangilinan.

The collaboration between MERALCO and Doosan will prioritize several strategic initiatives, including the potential rehabilitation of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) and the exploration of small modular reactors (SMRs) to support the Philippines’ growing energy needs and ensure long-term energy security.

In their effort to mitigate carbon emissions, both companies will also study the deployment of greenhouse gas reduction technologies, such as ammonia co-firing, in older thermal power plants.

Furthermore, the MOU outlined plans for the development and supply of gas turbines for combined cycle power projects within MERALCO’s subsidiaries, with Doosan stepping in as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor.

This partnership aligns with recent discussions between the Philippines and South Korea to assess the feasibility of reviving BNPP.
