Prime Energy Resources Development B.V. says that the firm received an Energy Project of National Significance (EPNS) certification from the Department of Energy (DOE) for its Malampaya Phase 4 initiative.
Manila Standard reported that Phase 4, named “Project Sinagtala,” includes drilling the Camago and Malampaya East production wells, along with the drilling of the Bagong Pag-asa exploration well.
This ENPS certification stressed the essential role of Malampaya as it aims to prolong the gas field’s lifespan and fulfill the country’s energy needs.
The project seeks to enhance gas production through the addition of two more wells, increasing the operational capacity of the Malampaya field and reducing the country’s dependence on imported fuels.
The project is operated under Service Contract No. 38 (SC 38) in partnership with consortium members UC38 LLC, PNOC Exploration Corp., and Prime Oil and Gas Inc.
It also serves as a fundamental component of energy security and economic development, providing up to 40 percent of Luzon’s energy demand at its peak and currently supplying about 20 percent of its energy needs.
Projects designated with EPNS status align with the implementation of the Philippine Energy Plan (PEP), facilitating expedited regulatory approvals for energy initiatives crucial for enhancing energy security and overall nation-building efforts.
Since its commercial operations commenced in 2001, the Malampaya gas project has contributed over $13.8 billion to the Philippine government.
