In a move that boosts clean power generation and local economies, Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN), through its renewable energy unit MGEN Renewable Energy Inc. (MGreen), has delivered 152.7 megawatts (MWac) of solar capacity across Luzon in the first quarter of 2025.

The rollout includes three solar projects: the 80.1 MWac Baras Solar in Rizal, the 52.8 MWac Cordon Solar in Isabela, and the 19.8 MWac Bongabon Solar in Nueva Ecija. Together, these sites are expected to supply renewable energy to over 154,000 households while supporting job creation and community development in host areas.

The Baras facility, now the first and only operational solar farm in Rizal, was recently expanded to complete MGEN’s solar commitments for the year. During construction, the Baras plant provided jobs to more than 1,600 workers—including 300 women—demonstrating how clean energy investments can drive local employment.

“Our expansion of MGreen Baras Solar is about helping communities, protecting the environment, and contributing to the country’s clean energy goals,” said Dennis B. Jordan, President and CEO of MGEN Renewable Energy, Inc. “This project reflects our commitment to building a greener future while bringing meaningful opportunities to the people of Baras and Rizal,” said during the solar plant’s inauguration event that was attended by key national and local government officials.

Department of Energy Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara praised the initiative, noting that clean energy projects do more than generate electricity—they stimulate economic activity and accelerate energy transition goals.

“Renewable energy is not just a source of power but also a source of employment. These kinds of projects offer opportunities, fosters economic growth, and paves the way for a brighter and more sustainable future,” said Guevara, who was the keynote speaker of the event.

The Bongabon Solar project, completed at least six months ahead of schedule, holds the distinction of being the first Green Energy Auction Program II (GEA II) project to go online. Cordon Solar, meanwhile, ranks among the largest solar farms under GEA II in Region 2.

With these latest additions, MGEN’s operational renewable energy capacity now stands at nearly 400 MWac across seven provinces, including Batangas, Ilocos Norte, Bulacan, and Tarlac. The company is on track to exceed its 1,500 MW renewables target by 2030.

Among the firm’s most ambitious ventures is the 3,500 MWp MTerra Solar project, which is expected to become the world’s largest integrated solar and battery storage facility. Phase 1 is slated for completion by February 2026.

Local officials welcomed the rollout. Rizal Governor Nina Ricci Ynares said the project supports power stability not just in Rizal but also in other areas, while Baras Mayor Wilfredo Robles emphasized the project’s potential to help lower greenhouse gas emissions.
