SNAP, Aboitiz Foundation bring solar power to remote Benguet school

SN Aboitiz Power-Benguet, Inc. (SNAP-Benguet), together with the Aboitiz Foundation, turned over a solar power and connectivity system to Domolpos Community School in Barangay Tinongdan, Itogon, on December 17, bringing reliable electricity and internet access to a remote school serving 16 students.

The installation includes a 6-kilowatt-peak solar power system, battery storage, and internet connectivity, which allows the school to power daily operations and access digital learning tools that were previously unavailable due to the lack of stable electricity.

“By bringing renewable energy and connectivity to schools like Domolpos Elementary School, we create conducive conditions where our students’ creativity and confidence can grow,” said SNAP President and CEO Joseph Yu. “We enable teachers to teach more effectively, and we inspire communities to imagine a wider future for their children.”

The project forms part of AuroraPH, an Aboitiz Foundation initiative that focuses on delivering renewable energy, connectivity, and digital education support to schools located in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.

Beyond the school itself, the initiative also brought 22 solar-powered streetlights to the surrounding community, improving visibility and safety for students, teachers, and residents, especially after dark.

AuroraPH was piloted in 2024 across 11 schools nationwide and has since been expanding to other parts of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao through partnerships with local communities, government agencies, and technology providers.

By combining small-scale solar systems with connectivity solutions, the project highlights how renewable energy can directly support education and digital inclusion in areas where traditional power infrastructure remains difficult to build—raising the question of how similar models can be scaled to reach more last-mile schools across the country.

As similar solar and connectivity projects expand to more remote communities, how can last-mile energy initiatives be scaled to reach other off-grid schools across the country?
