AboitizPower helps Mariveles women turn waste into income

Fifty women in Mariveles, Bataan are turning plastic trash into livelihood, thanks to a sustainability initiative backed by Aboitiz Power Corporation through GNPower Mariveles Energy Center (GMEC) and GNPower Dinginin (GNPD).

Through a program called “Waste to Material” under Project Saysay, participants learned to transform discarded plastics and tarpaulins into reusable products like bags, plant pots, and home décor. Most beneficiaries were spouses of local utility workers and garbage truck drivers.

The training, held at MWMCPC Event Place in Poblacion, was supported by TESDA and the Mariveles LGU. Toolkits with basic crafting tools and recyclable materials were distributed to all participants to help jumpstart their own home-based ventures.

According to the province’s Solid Waste Management Plan, Bataan generates over 310 tons of solid waste daily—projected to reach nearly 400 tons next year. With recyclables making up nearly a quarter of the total volume, organizers say programs like these are a practical way to cut waste while creating income.

“I used to ignore used tarps and bottles, but now I realize their value,” said beneficiary Lolita Manrique. “This is a big help, especially for those without jobs.”

TESDA trainer Sarah Rose Maglaya noted, “The training helped participants realize they could repurpose everyday waste at home.”

Project Saysay is a monthly volunteer program led by GMEC and GNPD employees celebrating their birthdays by giving back to the community. AboitizPower holds a 78.3% interest in GMEC and 70% in GNPD.
