The Antique province government is developing a renewable energy (RE) plan to transition to sustainable and inexpensive electricity derived from natural resources.
“After the Energy Forum, the Antique Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) will now come up with the Antique Renewable Energy Plan (AREP) that will be presented to the Provincial Development Council during its meeting next month so we can transition into renewable energy from the traditional coal and bunker fuel,” said Officer in charge Governor Dante Beriong.
Beriong added that the AREP would also provide the PDC with information on potential investments and funding sources for the projects.
Meanwhile, acting PPDO chief Bienvinido Nallos Jr. stated that Antique has micro and mini-hydropower facilities that could be funded to expand energy generation and that they are also looking into wind and solar energy.
Green Forum Panay Guimaras CEO Melvin Purzuelo highlighted areas in Antique where micro and mini-hydropower projects could be developed further. These areas, located in Sebaste, Culasi, Valderrama, and San Remigio, have the potential to meet the province’s growing energy needs if upgraded.
Purzuelo emphasized that these hydropower plants not only generate electricity but also provide irrigation and potable water to local communities.
The mini-hydropower plants are managed by the local government units (LGUs) in their respective areas.
