Jobin-SQM, Inc. (JSI), the clean energy subsidiary of Nickel Asia Corporation’s Emerging Power, Inc., is extending its sustainability work beyond power generation by producing “Bokashi Balls” to rehabilitate local waterways in Zambales.
Bokashi Balls, also known as Mabuhay Balls, are organic spheres infused with beneficial microorganisms that dissolve in rivers, lakes, and stagnant waters, breaking down harmful toxins and improving water quality.
“Simply, the Bokashi Balls, when they dissolve, reduce bad bacteria and help improve water quality in rivers, stagnant bodies of water, and other various waterways. It is organic so it is sustainable and a safe way of addressing water and other aquatic pollution,” said JSI Environmental and Community Relations Senior Associate and Pollution Control Officer Orlando Dabu, Jr.
JSI partnered with Sambali Agri Farm to learn and share the craft of making Bokashi Balls with communities. The company is also working with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority’s Ecology Department, the Tribal Chieftain and Councils of Tribong Ayta Ambala ng Pastolan, Inc. (TAAPI), and the Barangay Local Government Unit to advocate for clean water initiatives.
The project supports multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 14: Life Below Water.
For JSI, which operates the 172 MW solar power plant in Mt. Sta. Rita, Zambales, the initiative underscores how renewable energy firms can drive broader sustainability agendas through innovation and community partnerships.
