DOST deploys solar-powered water filtration tech in Quirino village

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has rolled out a solar-powered water filtration system in Barangay Calaocan, Cabarroguis, Quirino, aiming to provide sustainable access to clean water for remote communities, the Philippine Information Agency reports.

The project, implemented by DOST Cagayan Valley through the Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO) of Quirino, is part of its Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program. Known as ‘Empowering Communities through TUBIG-DOST,’ the initiative features the SAFEWATERS system—a solar-powered filtration technology developed by the DOST-Industrial Technology Development Institute.

DOST Quirino Provincial Director Engr. Rocela Angelica Gorospe said the effort seeks to support communities with limited access to potable water. “This is the second round of assistance granted to Barangay Calaocan under the CEST initiative, reflecting DOST’s sustained commitment to community development,” she added.

CEST program focal person Daisy D. Simon said the project cost PHP 542,400, which also covers livelihood support, capacity-building training, and technology adoption efforts.

Barangay officials welcomed the installation, citing improved quality of life for residents. “We didn’t realize we could become so engaged with technology. We promise to value and take care of this assistance so that future generations may also benefit from it,” said Barangay Councilor Leo Velasco.

Punong Barangay Fernando Dango also expressed gratitude to the DOST, noting its significant impact on the community.
