EDC Explores Carbon Capture to Support Net Zero Emissions Goal

Energy Development Corporation (EDC) is taking a big leap forward in its climate action strategy with the development of a Net Zero Roadmap that includes the exploration of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology.

As part of its larger Decarbonization Program, EDC aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its geothermal operations, which are already among the cleanest forms of energy production in the Philippines. The company’s goal is to achieve net-zero emissions—where the amount of carbon dioxide it emits is balanced by the amount it removes or offsets.

A key feature of this roadmap is the planned use of CCS technology. This process captures carbon dioxide from industrial sources and stores it underground, preventing it from entering the atmosphere. While geothermal energy is considered low-carbon, EDC is looking to minimize its environmental impact even further through innovation.

“Through these efforts, we are not only preserving our legacy. We are leading the way to our nation’s decarbonization journey for generations to come,” the company stated in its president’s integrated report.

EDC is currently working with various external partners to conduct feasibility studies on the use of CCS in its geothermal operations. These assessments will evaluate whether the technology is suitable for deployment based on technical, environmental, and financial considerations.

The company targets 2025 for the completion of these studies. If the results are favorable, EDC plans to install pilot CCS equipment in 2026, allowing the company to test the technology on a smaller scale before potentially implementing it as is across more facilities.

This program reflects EDC’s long-standing commitment to sustainable practices and innovation in clean energy. By investing in advanced solutions like CCS, the company seeks to reinforce its role in the Philippines’ transition to a low-carbon future.

EDC’s efforts also support broader national and global climate goals, aligning with the Philippines’ commitments under international climate agreements. With geothermal as its core business, EDC is positioning itself not just as a renewable energy leader, but as a pioneer in responsible and science-driven decarbonization.
