The Department of Energy (DOE) has recognized First Gen–Energy Development Corporation’s Bac-Man Geothermal Power Plant in Bicol as a recipient of the Sustainable Energy Awards 2025, citing the facility’s contribution to the country’s renewable energy goals.
Commissioned in 1993, Bac-Man supplies geothermal power from steamfields spanning Manito, Albay and Bacon, Sorsogon. The facility was later acquired by First Gen–EDC from PSALM and underwent rehabilitation and modernization after typhoon damage had reduced its output to zero, eventually allowing operations to return to full capacity within two years.
First Gen–EDC said the recognition comes as the company approaches a milestone year in its geothermal operations. “In 2026, we are celebrating our 50 years – half a century of geothermal excellence, and Bac-Man, which was commissioned in 1993, is part of that continuing legacy,” said Erwin Avante, chief financial officer of First Gen–EDC.
The company also pointed to Bac-Man’s role during Super Typhoon Rolly in 2020, when Bac-Man Geothermal Inc. extended power supply beyond its contractual obligation to the Bicol Grid. At the time, the plant carried out islanding operations as the region’s sole power provider, supporting electricity restoration during both the typhoon and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We remain committed to providing the country with indigenous, clean, renewable and 24/7 energy and Bac-Man’s recent expansion projects in the last two years are a testament to this commitment,” Avante said.
Beyond the Bac-Man facility, its operator has expanded geothermal capacity in recent years with the launch of the 28.9-MW Palayan Binary Geothermal Power Plant in 2024 and the 22-MW Tanawon Geothermal Power Plant in 2025, alongside the commercial operation of a 20-MW/20-MWh battery energy storage system.
The company said its geothermal operations are complemented by environmental initiatives, including reforestation and watershed management, noting that Bac-Man avoided 953,473 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions in 2024.
As recognition programs highlight the performance of existing renewable facilities, how can long-running geothermal plants continue to play a role in strengthening grid reliability and advancing climate goals?
