Greenpeace Philippines has reiterated its solidarity with Bataan communities and grassroots advocates in their ongoing opposition to reviving the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP). This coincided with the 40th anniversary of the 1985 “Welga ng Bayan Laban sa BNPP” protest .
In a statement, Greenpeace highlighted the potential risks of restarting the BNPP. They cited international nuclear incidents such as Chernobyl and Fukushima as cautionary examples. They also emphasized that nuclear energy carries environmental, public health, and economic dangers.
Greenpeace campaigner Khevin Yu expressed concern that the swift passage of the Philippine Nuclear Safety Act in Congress could mislead the public by underplaying long-term nuclear risks. This could include both seismic and design vulnerabilities specific to the Bataan site . “We must not set aside safer, more cost‑effective alternatives like solar, wind, and hydropower,” Yu said .
The group also warned that nuclear-generated electricity is more expensive, estimated at around USD 140–222 per megawatt-hour, compared to currently available renewable sources .
Greenpeace urged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to veto the proposed nuclear safety legislation and to shift focus toward a “just transition” by investing in renewables that prioritize environmental sustainability and community well-being .
