Limay, Bataan coal plant set for operations in May 2017, SMC says

SMC Global Power Holdings is targeting the completion of its 150 MW first unit of the Limay, Bataan coal – fired power plant by May, followed by the second unit in the next three months, the company’s top official said.

“Delay na nga apat na buwan [It’s been delayed by four months],” San Miguel Corp. (SMC) President Ramon Ang said in a report by BusinessWorld.

The first 150 MW of the 600 MW project will run on diesel with the scheduled maintenance shutdown of the Malampaya natural gas offshore platform.

Meanwhile, the third and fourth units of the circulating fluidized bed (CFB) power plant is expected to run by 2018 with a capacity of 150 MW each, Ang added.

The Malampaya gas project is set to undergo a maintenance shutdown from January 28 to February 16. The project, located in the offshores of Palawan, accounts for 20% of the country’s power requirements.

Around 2, 170 MW worth of power will be non-operational on the 20 day maintenance period of the Malampaya gas project set in the last week of January, higher than the expected outage of 1,850 MW.

SMC Global is overlooking three power plants in the country; a coal plant in Sual, Pangasinan; a natural gas facility in Ilijan, Batangas, and a hydroelectric power plant in San Roque, Pangasinan. The plants combine a capacity of 2, 545 MW.
