With the government considering introducing nuclear energy into the country’s power mix, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. looks forward to a collaboration with the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC).
Marcos Jr. expressed the government’s interest in considering nuclear energy for power generation to ENEC chairman and CEO Mohamed Al Hammadi.
“This is a subject that we have been talking about for a long time and especially after the pandemic, I’m trying to figure out what are the needs of the government… This has become a very high priority topic. I hope we can find ways to help each other in this,” Marcos told Hammadi.
In June, First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos, together with select government officials and individuals from the private sector, visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and met with ENEC officials.
In this meeting, Liza Marcos was informed about the invitation extended to the Chief Executive to participate in the International Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy – 2024 Objectives at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this September.
The First Lady responded by stating that she would bring the matter to the President’s attention and mentioned that the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is currently gathering input from relevant agencies about the Philippines’ potential participation.
The International Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy has set a goal to expand global nuclear energy capacity to three times its current level by 2050.
