Meralco brings back eco-friendly Christmas display to Intramuros

Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has switched on its holiday lighting display at Plaza Roma in Intramuros for the second straight year, reinforcing its push for energy-efficient public installations as the Christmas season draws near.

The Meralco Liwanag Park was officially opened on November 26 through a ceremonial switch-on led by officials from Meralco, its corporate social responsibility arm One Meralco Foundation (OMF), the Intramuros Administration, and the Department of Tourism.

The event was attended by OMF President Jeffrey Tarayao, Intramuros Administrator Atty. Joan Padilla, Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, Meralco Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer Ferdinand Geluz, and Senior Vice President and Chief External and Government Affairs Officer Atty. Arnel Paciano D. Casanova.

Positioned at Plaza Roma, the seasonal attraction is expected to draw families, tourists, and heritage enthusiasts to the historic walled city during the holidays.

This year’s display puts emphasis on sustainability and energy efficiency—an angle closely watched by power sector stakeholders. Among the centerpiece installations is a 20-foot Christmas tree built from recycled electric meter covers and steel crossarms and illuminated using LED lighting. Another highlight is a replica of Meralco’s historic tranvia made from recycled wooden boards, symbolizing the utility’s roots and its long-standing connection to Intramuros.

The Liwanag Park will be open to the public daily until January 4, 2026, from 6PM to 11PM.
