The Manila Electric Company’s (MERALCO) board of directors have announced the promotion of longtime spokesman Agapito “Joe” Zaldarriaga as its Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, the utility giant said that Zaldarriaga’s appointment became effective last December 1.

Zaldarriaga, who currently chairs and was the president of the International Association of Business Communicators – Philippines (IABC Philippines), led the country’s largest power distributor to multiple accolades here and abroad.

These include a four-time Company of the Year win for MERALCO at IABC Philippines’ Quill Awards, the only company to do so; a PR Team of the Year award at the Anvil Awards, dubbed as the “Oscars of Public Relations,” conferred by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines; a Silver Stevie for Communications Team of the Year at the 2018 International Business Awards (IBA) — the world’s premiere business awards; and a Gold Stevie for Community Relations in the 2016 IBA.

Zaldarriaga, a familiar face whenever MERALCO explains various news items about the company, graduated from De La Salle University in 1985 with a degree in Asian Studies specializing in the Japan studies program.
