MPA and MSU-GenSan Sign Deal to Equip Students for Energy Sector Careers

Meralco Power Academy (MPA) and Mindanao State University–General Santos (MSU-GenSan) have officialized a partnership to advance education, training, and research in the energy sector. This reinforces efforts to equip students with industry-relevant skills and knowledge.

Officials from both institutions recently signed a memorandum of agreement at the Meralco headquarters in Pasig City. The collaboration aims to offer specialized training programs, immersive learning opportunities, and academic initiatives tailored to the ever-evolving needs of the power and energy industry.

Among the planned initiatives are the Mindanao leg of the Young Engineers and Scientists Summit. To come along with this is the development of academic programs in key fields such as renewable energy and nuclear science.

MSU-GenSan Chancellor Shidik T. Abantas highlighted the value of the partnership in addressing skill mismatches and ensuring that students are better prepared for the job market. He emphasized the need to align academic curricula with the demands of the energy sector. He especially noted that industry partnerships can help shape a more responsive and future-ready workforce.

“This collaboration is vital for MSU-General Santos as it bridges our colleges with industry,” Abantas said during the signing ceremony.

The partnership follows a similar initiative between MPA and MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT). Both efforts reflect MPA’s commitment to empowering aspiring engineers and scientists with practical expertise that meets industry standards.

Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho, who also serves as MPA President, said the partnership is especially significant as it covers areas such as artificial intelligence and energy. These are critical domains that align with MPA’s long-term goals.

“We see great potential for impactful collaboration with MSU-GenSan in these critical areas,” Aperocho stated.

MPA, established in 2013, is Meralco’s education arm focused on cultivating energy professionals through training programs in sustainable energy, energy efficiency, electrical safety, and other power-related disciplines. The academy leverages Meralco’s 120 years of industry experience to promote innovation and inclusive growth in the sector.
