Napocor, Palawan LGU ink deal to power 6000 homes

The National Power Corp (Napocor) has inked a deal with the local government units (LGUs) of Palawan to fire up eight new Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) power plants that will provide electricity service to about 6,000 households and spur tourism in the province.

Napocor will provide the generating sets, fuel, and power for the new SPUG plants, while the local government will provide the powerhouses and plant site.

The new SPUGs stand in Barangay Tara, Coron; Paly, Beton, Casian in Taytay; Concepcion, Agutaya; Nangalao, Linapacan; and Bancalaan 1&2 in Balabac.

“Palawan being hailed as the best island in the world by various international magazines, we are certain that tourists will continue to flock the province in the coming years and power supply in these areas will help locals start or improve their businesses to cater to domestic and international tourists,” Napocor president Ma. Gladys Cruz – Sta. Rita said.

The firm also said that the power supply it gives in the farthest islands and communities assures the implementation of the national government’s programs in health, infrastructure, and education.

“The MOA is the realization of the commitment we made during the formulation of a village electrification convergence action plan for the province held in 2016,” Sta. Rita said.

The said action plan was an avenue for the stakeholders like the Department of Energy (DOE), Napocor, Palawan Electric Cooperative (PALECO), National Electrification Administration (NEA), Busanga Island Electric Cooperative (BISELCO), and the Provincial Government of Palawan (PGP) to talk and agree on each company’s roles in developing the power supply of the province.
