The Philippine Geothermal Production Company, Inc. (PGPC) has launched a large-scale environmental program to plant more than one million trees across seven provinces in Luzon over the next five years.
The project will cover over 1,200 hectares of land surrounding PGPC’s existing and future geothermal steam fields. Identified reforestation sites include the foothills of Mt. Makiling in Batangas and Laguna, Mt. Daklan in Benguet, Mt. Malinao in Albay, Mt. Labo in Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Quezon, as well as parts of the Bicol Natural Park.
The initiative was officially launched in Malinao, Albay with the ceremonial planting of 1,000 seedlings at PGPC’s geothermal reservation in Barangay Sugcad. The event was attended by national and local government officials, community groups, and company executives.
“This re-greening program underscores PGPC’s dual commitment to clean energy and the environment,” said Napoleon L. Saporsantos Jr., PGPC President. “It reflects our dedication to environmental stewardship as we develop new geothermal energy sources that will significantly contribute to the country’s renewable energy portfolio.”
PGPC has been a pioneer in geothermal energy in Southeast Asia since 1979. It currently operates the Tiwi geothermal steam field in Albay and the Mak-Ban steam field in Batangas and Laguna, with a combined capacity of up to 300 megawatts (MW). The company is also expanding its footprint through exploration and development of new concession areas across Luzon, which is projected to contribute an additional 300 MW of renewable baseload capacity in the coming years.
The five-year tree-planting program highlights PGPC’s long-term vision of combining renewable energy development with environmental restoration.
