Following the Department of Energy’s (DOE) moratorium on the construction of new coal power plants, San Miguel Corporation (SMC) has abandoned its plans to build one in the future.

SMC President and COO Ramon S. Ang said they are willing to follow the government’s regulations.

Data from the DOE as of July showed that SMC’s subsidiaries were hoping to put up new coal-fired plants with a total capacity of 3,628 megawatts (MW). This accounted for 37% of the 9,803 MW coal projects that were being explored, but subject to government approval.

Had the projects pushed through, SMC’s supposed coal projects would supposedly generate 2,400 MW in Luzon, 600 MW in the Visayas, and 628 MW in Mindanao.
