Conglomerate San Miguel Corp.’s (SMC) donation has reached P947.7 million as it continues to find ways to provide relief assistance to the hardest hit communities and provinces across the country, according to the company.

SMC President and Chief Operating Officer Ramon S. Ang said the company has been providing assistance from local government units (LGUs) outside Metro Manila, reaching as far as Iloilo and Leyte.

“Our people are working hard to be able to extend our assistance to more provinces and communities and to support our national government’s efforts. Our goal is to help keep our countrymen away from hunger and illness, and somehow, in our own way, give them hope during this difficult time,” Ang was quoted in a report.

As of April 14, the company’s total food donations amounted to P227 million, consisting of canned goods, biscuits, coffee, and milk. These were delivered through the LGUs and non-profit organizations.

SMC also handed out 1.1 million kilograms of rice worth around P38.4 million, as well as a total of 864,740 liters of 70 percent ethyl alcohol worth P64.9 million, which was given to various hospitals, LGUs, national government agencies, as well as other organizations.

P500 million were used to purchase protective gear from local and international suppliers, including China.

Around P100 million were given to “Project Ugnayan.” This consists of business groups helping COVID-19 battle.

Meanwhile, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has donated P5 million worth of gift certificates for families affected by the health crisis.

This on top of the P1-billion assistance earlier given to the national government’s relief efforts against the pandemic.
