Integrated energy firm Semirara Mining and Power Corp. (SMPC) has received the Three Golden Arrow Award from the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) for its performance in the 2024 ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard (ACGS), marking its continued distinction among the Philippines’ top publicly listed companies for governance excellence.

The award recognizes SMPC’s sustained commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership. The company has been a consistent Golden Arrow awardee since 2019, and this year marks the third consecutive time it has earned the Three Golden Arrows — one of the highest commendations for corporate governance in the country.

“We are deeply honored to receive this recognition from the Institute of Corporate Directors,” said SMPC President, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Sustainability Officer Maria Cristina C. Gotianun. “At SMPC, good governance is the foundation of how we operate, serve our communities, and build a sustainable future for all.”

The Three Golden Arrows distinction places SMPC among the best-performing listed firms in ASEAN, underscoring its adherence to sound governance principles. The recognition also reinforces the company’s sustainability agenda anchored on its 5Es framework — Education, Environment, Empowerment, Employment, and Emergency Preparedness & Resilience — guiding its goal of creating long-term value for both stakeholders and communities.

The 2024 ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard introduces a revised framework aligned with the updated G20/OECD Principles of Corporate Governance, featuring new indicators on sustainability and resilience. It aims to promote alignment with global best practices and highlight companies demonstrating leadership in governance across ASEAN member states.

SMPC, the country’s largest domestic coal producer and a vertically integrated energy company, said it will continue embedding strong governance and sustainability practices as it contributes to national energy security and economic development.

What can other Philippine energy firms learn from SMPC’s governance and sustainability framework as global reporting and ESG standards continue to evolve?
