SunAsia Energy plants 500 bamboo trees in Cabuyao wetlands

Renewable energy developer SunAsia Energy has planted 500 bamboo trees in the Cabuyao wetlands along Ilog ng Romana, expanding its environmental interventions alongside its renewable energy portfolio in the Philippines.

The initiative, carried out with partners and local stakeholders, is aimed at enhancing river system resilience through nature-based solutions. The bamboo plantation is expected to evolve into a biofiltration zone that can help improve water quality, reduce erosion, and strengthen flood resilience in the surrounding watershed over time.

SunAsia Energy said the activity as part of its broader sustainability strategy, underscoring that environmental protection is being integrated into its renewable energy developments, particularly floating solar projects that interact directly with water ecosystems.

The company is currently developing and advancing floating solar projects in the country, positioning these installations as part of a wider push for hybrid land-and-water renewable energy solutions.

Its pipeline includes utility-scale floating solar initiatives designed to maximize underutilized water surfaces such as reservoirs, lakes, and irrigation systems, while reducing land-use conflict and supporting decarbonization targets in the power sector.

As renewable energy developers expand into water-based infrastructure, how should ecological co-benefits like watershed restoration be measured and regulated alongside energy output targets?
