The Regional Board of Investments of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (RBOI-ARMM) has approved an eight megawatt capacity diesel power plant project in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.

Kaltimex Rural Energy Corporation will head the project, which aims to provide “stable power supply” through the Tawi-Tawi Electric Cooperative Inc.

The diesel plant costs around P831 million.

RBOI-ARMM chair and managing head Atty. Ishak Mastura said the Kaltimex registration is timely since 70 percent of households in the region have scarce access to power.

“The region is in dire need of power especially in the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi where residents miserably experience daily rotational brownouts due to power shortage,” Mastura said.

The diesel plant could encourage more investors in the energy industry of ARMM as the region is the least penetrated market for power projects in the county.

“The Kaltimex project in Tawi-Tawi could encourage more investors to come and invest in ARMM not only on energy but could open-up to agri-fishery, processing and manufacturing projects as well,” Mastura added.

Kaltimex also specializes in providing power in off-grid areas. The company is set to expand operations in Basilan and Sulu.
