The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) identifies Nuclear science and related studies as critical in combating climate change.
In a report by the Manila Bulletin, DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. highlighted that despite the Philippines being a minor contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, everyone should still be concerned due to potential health impacts, in addition to environmental reasons.
Solidum Jr. further underscored nuclear technology’s potential for developing alternative energy sources, especially nuclear power, which could substantially reduce emissions.
Additionally, the multifaceted applications of nuclear technology extend beyond energy to include areas like medicine, agriculture, and industry which is why nuclear power served as a promising avenue for the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI).
The DOST also expressed strong support for the Nuclear Energy Program Inter-Agency Committee’s initiatives and the establishment of an independent regulatory body for ionizing radiation sources through the pending bill, the Philippine National Nuclear Energy Safety Act.
In emphasizing the importance of nuclear technology, the DOST Secretary underscores its significance not only as a potential power source for economic development but also for ensuring its safe, secure, and responsible use.
