Quezon Power Philippines Ltd. Co. (QPPL) is aiming to construct a 1,200 megawatt (MW) liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant as well as an onshore regasification and storage facility, amounting to around Php 71 billion, in Mauban, Quezon.
As per Manila Standard, QPPL said in its documents for the public consultation for the environmental compliance certificate submitted to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the construction of the San Francisco power plant is scheduled for the same year, and its commercial operations were set to commence by 2028.
This facility would function as an LNG import terminal and a combined cycle gas turbine power plant, using LNG as fuel and fuel oil as a backup, to ensure a consistent supply of electricity in Luzon.
The project, situated in proximity to QPPL’s 470 MW coal plant and SBPL’s 500 MW supercritical coal-fired power facility, is a collaborative effort between affiliates of Manila Electric Company’s (MERALCO) MERALCO PowerGen Corporation and EGCO Group.
The said project will be connected to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) through the installation of a new dedicated 230 kV transmission line. This line was planned to be established within the existing 31-kilometer (km) right-of-way transmission line of QPPL and San Buenaventura Power Ltd. (SBL) in Tayabas, Quezon.
Additionally, the project would hire around 1,500 workers and laborers during its construction period lasting around 39 months.
QPPL, formerly owned by Thailand’s Electricity Generating Public Company (EGCO), ran Mauban’s 460 MW pulverized coal-fired power plant.
