Manila Electric Co. (MERALCO) has initiated the bidding process for 400 megawatts (MW) of mid-merit power supply to maintain uninterrupted customer services.
In a recent report by the Philippine Star, MERALCO’s Senior Vice President and Regulatory Management Head, Jose Ronald Valles, announced that they will be tendering 400 MW of mid-merit power.
Valles clarified that this bidding round is open to both greenfield and brownfield power plant operators, emphasizing that it will be MERALCO’s final power supply agreement (PSA) for 2024.
The competitive selection process (CSP) launched by MERALCO aims to secure a 15-year PSA starting from August 26, 2025. Under CSP terms, each bidder must offer a minimum contract capacity of 150 MW.
Interested power suppliers can obtain bidding documents upon payment of a non-refundable fee, which ranges from Php 2.5 million to Php 12,000 multiplied by the MW of contract capacity offered.
The deadline for expression of interest submissions is set for July 1, with a pre-bid conference scheduled for July 11 and the bid submission deadline on August 9.
Encouraging participation, a Department of Energy (DOE) advisory urges power suppliers with natural gas-fired plants to prioritize indigenous natural gas in their bids.
Previously, MERALCO launched bids for 600 MW of baseload supply starting August 26 next year and 500 MW of mid-merit renewable energy capacity, part of efforts to increase clean energy in its portfolio.
These initiatives align with MERALCO’s commitment to ensuring reliable, sufficient, and cost-effective power for its customers.
