As Holy Week approaches, Filipinos are preparing to travel, prompting the Department of Energy (DOE) to implement proactive measures ensuring nationwide energy reliability and safety. These include maintaining uninterrupted power in homes and transport hubs, securing fuel supply along major highways, and providing updated guides on electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
“The Holy Week is a time for introspection and renewal. It is also an opportunity to become more mindful of our energy use — whether on the road or at home,” said Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla.
To ensure that energy scarcity is avoided, the DOE has coordinated with power generation companies, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), distribution utilities, and electric cooperatives. These stakeholders have been instructed to closely monitor grid conditions and deploy response teams as needed, especially in tourist hotspots and island provinces where demand may spike.
The NGCP and local utilities are told to ensure system stability and have rapid response teams ready for any emergency in this Lenten period. In anticipation of heavier traffic, the DOE has also coordinated with petroleum retailers to secure adequate fuel supply and operational readiness at service stations, especially along major highways. Oil companies have committed to maintaining extended hours and technical staff availability to accommodate increased motorist demand.
For electric vehicle (EV) owners, the DOE reported that 962 publicly accessible charging stations are now operational as of today. The majority are located in NCR and EV owners are told to check the Philippine Electric Vehicle Industry Portal at https://evindustry.ph to locate nearby charging points.
“We thank our partners in the electricity and downstream oil sectors for their collaboration to ensure a steady power supply, accessible fuel, and a safe, smooth travel experience for all,” Lotilla said.
Alongside all of these efforts, the DOE also reminds civilian consumers that they can do their part in conserving and using energy efficiently. Households are advised to unplug idle appliances, maximize natural lighting during the day, and set air conditioners to moderate temperatures.
Homeowners are also encouraged to check the quality of their electrical outlets and chords to avoid any electrical or fire hazard. These small changes can contribute to energy efficiency and reduce electricity bills.
The DOE reaffirms its commitment to supporting the Filipino people during Holy Week — powering every journey, securing every destination, and fostering safe and energy-conscious communities.
