The Department of Public Works and Highways – Cagayan de Oro 1st District Engineering Office (DPWH-CDO 1st DEO) is set to install solar-powered streetlights along Masterson Avenue in Barangay Upper Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City. The project, starting this May 2025, covers the stretch from KarrJackson Automotive Shop-Uptown to Wilcon Depot.

The program, according to a report by the Philippine Information Agency,  includes the installation of 70-meter solar-powered streetlights and construction of a center island aimed at improving nighttime visibility and reducing the risk of road accidents. The project forms part of DPWH’s efforts to integrate clean energy solutions into road infrastructure while supporting safer urban mobility.

District Engineer Ana Lee M. Manzano led a coordination meeting on April 24 to align with key stakeholders including the Cagayan de Oro City Water District (COWD), Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA), Cebu Landmasters Inc. (CLI), and Xavier University Campus of the Future (XUCOF). These groups committed to supporting traffic management, public information campaigns, and infrastructure coordination during the implementation phase.

The project supports the broader goals of the “Bagong Pilipinas” initiative by promoting sustainable infrastructure and energy efficiency in public works. Upon completion, the upgraded stretch of Masterson Avenue is expected to provide safer and more orderly transportation for both motorists and pedestrians.

DPWH said the use of solar-powered lighting will reduce electricity consumption and contribute to the city’s long-term sustainability goals while enhancing road safety on one of CDO’s busiest urban corridors.
