Alternergy’s solar-powered LiDAR probes wind energy potential in Albay

A solar-powered Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) system is now collecting wind measurements in Albay Province, marking the start of Alternergy Holdings Corporation’s wind resource assessment for a potential project in the Bicol region.

“Our LiDAR system has started collecting wind measurements that will be instrumental in determining feasibility of the project. We are excited to explore the wind power potential of Albay Province and support the province’s sustainability goals,” said Knud Hedeager, president of Alternergy Wind Holdings Corporation.

Alternergy said powering the LiDAR with solar energy reflects its commitment to sustainable practices. The Albay Wind Power Projects 1 and 3 form part of the company’s “Road to 1 GW by 2030” expansion plan, which aims to develop up to 500 MW of additional wind, solar, and run-of-river hydro capacity over the next two years.

The assessment follows the Department of Energy’s issuance earlier this year of a Certificate of Authority (COA) for the Albay Wind Power Projects. The COA gives Alternergy three years to complete pre-feasibility studies and secure permits before the project can advance to a 25-year Wind Energy Service Contract, if found commercially viable.

A meteorological mast will also be installed in the fourth quarter of 2025 to coincide with the upcoming wind season. “The installation of the met mast will reinforce the ongoing wind assessment by our LiDAR system and will provide additional data to assist in our resource analysis,” Hedeager said.
