The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has completed 9 capital expenditure projects in the second half of 2025. This adds 450 mega-volt amperes (MVA) of capacity and enhances the reliability of its distribution network in Manila as well as other key parts of Luzon (Bulacan, Laguna, and Quezon).
One of these new facilities include the ASEANA Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Substation in Parañaque, which now powers major commercial developments such as ASEANA 3, Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Seda Manila Bay, and Uni-Asia International Prime Holdings Inc. In Pasig and Quezon City. Another is the expanded Bridgetowne GIS Substation which caters to Exxa and Zetta Towers, Giga Tower, and Opus Mall. The upgraded Makati GIS Substation, on the other hand, supplies power to customers such as Cash & Carry Mall, St. Clare’s Medical Center, and SMDC Red Residences.
In Southern Luzon, Meralco has boosted the capacity of the Tayabas Power Transformer from 100 MVA to 300 MVA in an effort to address the ever-growing demand in parts of Quezon and Laguna. The Dila-Real 115 kilovolt (kV) line in Laguna also received network reliability upgrades, thus improving its service to Calamba, Los Baños, Bay, Pila, and Calauan. In Bulacan, the Malolos-Tabang and Malolos-Calumpit 69 kV lines were energized to support rising power needs and the Department of Transportation’s North-South Commuter Railway project.
The company also made big strides by launching its first fully indoor GIS switching station in Regalado, Quezon City. This improved operational flexibility in parts of Quezon City and Caloocan and ensured dependable power for critical services such as the ST Telemedia Global Data Centers. Over in Cavite, the Abubot Substation was upgraded with three new 115-kV circuit breakers and other equipment to support customers in Dasmariñas, General Trias, and Imus, including De La Salle University Medical Center and San Miguel Yamamura.
“These projects are part of Meralco’s broader network enhancement strategy, ensuring that our infrastructure is future-ready to meet growing energy demand while improving operational flexibility and service reliability,” said Meralco First Vice President and Head of Networks Froilan J. Savet. “As demand continues to grow, we will continue to upgrade and expand our facilities and strengthen our distribution network which serves as the backbone of our efforts to support the country’s economic development.”
