DOE opens National Energy Consciousness Month with focus on 2026 priorities

The Department of Energy (DOE) opened National Energy Consciousness Month (NECM) on December 1 with a call to strengthen public awareness and support for the country’s energy transition. Speaking at the launch of the NECM Exhibit at the DOE Compound, Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin said, “Energy is not just comfort or convenience; it is a foundation of daily life.”

Garin outlined seven priorities for 2026, starting with improved policies and clearer procedures across the energy sector. These include upstream petroleum processes, tighter LPG and fuel standards, and efficiency targets for local governments and schools. She also announced an Energy Excellence Center featuring an Energy Museum, solar laboratory, hydrogen training facilities, and new academic partnerships.

The DOE is also pushing greater digitalization through faster online services, improved data systems, and a more integrated Energy Virtual One-Stop Shop. Facility upgrades, stronger regional offices, and new command centers are part of the agency’s institutional improvements. “We want DOE to be more open, more proactive, and more people-centered,” Garin stated.

She directed attached agencies to align with these priorities. NEA was urged to accelerate electrification, while NAPOCOR was asked to expand hybridization and improve watershed management. PNOC was encouraged to deepen clean energy collaboration, TRANSCO to enhance networks in remote areas, and PSALM to continue responsible privatization efforts.

Garin also invited students and professionals to consider roles in the sector, calling DOE a space for innovation and public service. “We welcome scholars, young professionals, and experts who want to build a meaningful career in shaping the country’s energy future,” she concluded.

As NECM activities continue this month, what efforts do you think would most effectively strengthen nationwide energy consciousness?
