Hi. If you are reading this and you were affected by last night’s unexpected power outage, it’s because of ‘sudden plant outages.’

On Tuesday night, some areas of Rizal, Bulacan, Laguna, Quezon and Metro Manila lost power after some power plants bogged down, Manila Electric Co. (MERALCO) said.

“Your power supply may have been affected by a sudden plant outage that occurred at 7:30 PM (November 15, 2016) and may last for 10-15 minutes,” Meralco announced on their twitter page.

“Based on the information we have, there are several plants that went offline kaya mayroon tayong deficiency sa Meralco franchise areas,” Joe Zaldarriaga, Meralco’s spokesperson said in a radio interview with DZMM.

Meralco said that about 1,400 to 1,600 megawatts of power sliced off the grid after the ‘outages’ in Sta. Rita, San Gabriel, San Lorenzo and QPPL in Batangas around 7:30 last night.

Zaldarriaga said that Meralco was distributing 5,300 MW before the brownout.

“’Yung kakapusan natin, more than 20 percent,” Zaldarriaga said.

In a report by ABS-CBN News, First Gen Corp said that its Sta. Rita, Santa Lorenzo and San Gabriel power plants went down at around 7:31 PM.

“We understand there was at least another plant that also went down. The cause of the incident is still under investigation,” First Gen said.
