Balesin Island in Polillo, Quezon, will now have access to a stable and sustainable power supply through a new solar-battery hybrid system developed by Aboitiz Upgrade Solar Inc., the joint venture of Aboitiz Power Distributed Renewables Inc. (APx) and Upgrade Energy Philippines (UGEP).
Inaugurated on September 19, 2025, the project introduces a hybrid energy setup that pairs solar generation with battery storage. With a solar capacity of 4.128 MWdc / 2.880 MWac and an integrated battery capacity of 2.750 MW / 5.504 MWh, the facility is designed to provide continuous power even during nighttime and cloudy conditions.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin, who led the launch, said the system demonstrates how island resorts and remote tourist destinations can secure clean, reliable, and affordable energy.
Balesin Island consumes about 700 MWh of electricity monthly. The new hybrid facility is expected to meet 60 percent of this demand, significantly reducing reliance on diesel while ensuring uninterrupted service for residents, businesses, and tourists.
The project underscores the growing role of renewable energy in addressing the energy challenges of off-grid areas. By combining solar power with battery storage, the system stabilizes supply and makes renewable generation viable for communities with fluctuating demand patterns.
“This project demonstrates that renewable energy, when coupled with appropriate technologies, is not only technically feasible but also economically viable,” the Department of Energy said in a Facebook post.
With its completion, the Balesin hybrid system sets an example for sustainable energy solutions in island communities, ensuring dependable supply while advancing the Philippines’ renewable energy transition.
