Aboitiz Renewables unit seeks ERC approval for PHP 564.6-M Ilocos Norte solar interconnection

North Luzon Green Power, Inc. (NLGPI), a unit of Aboitiz Renewables Inc., is asking for approval from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to develop a PHP 564.6-million dedicated transmission facility that will connect its solar power project in Ilocos Norte to the Luzon grid.

In an Order dated February 19, the ERC judged the company’s application to be sufficient and advanced the case into further proceedings under the title of ERC Case No. 2026-004 MC.

The proposed interconnection project revolves around the development of point-to-point limited transmission facilities that will link the Talingaan-Laoag Solar Power Project to the 230-kilovolt (kV) Laoag Substation of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

The facility will consist of a 6.5-kilometer double-circuit 230 kV transmission line, made up of a combination of overhead lines and underground cable segments. The dedicated line will be used specifically and solely to transmit power from the solar project to the main grid.

The solar project has a capacity of 187.044 megawatt-peak (MWp) or 149.600 megawatts alternating current (MWAC). It also includes an integrated 56.000 MWAC battery energy storage system with a capacity of 276.954 megawatt-hours (MWh).

Under Section 9 of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act, generation companies are required to secure prior approval from the ERC before developing or operating dedicated transmission facilities. NLGPI filed its application on January 16, 2026 through the Energy Virtual One-Stop Shop portal.

The ERC has scheduled the case for compliance determination, expository presentation, and pre-trial conference on March 25, 2026.

The Commission also called on the NGCP as a necessary party to the case and directed it to submit a verified comment ahead of the hearing. NLGPI is likewise seeking provisional authority to allow the development and operation of the facility pending final approval of its application.

As more renewable energy projects move forward, how will dedicated grid interconnections shape the pace of solar and battery integration into the Luzon grid?
